  1. Personally, I think the "mystery recruit" is just Boeheim being cocky. I calculate there's only about a 58% chance SU frees up a scholarship for 2015 (http://sujuiceonline.com/2014/06/18/how-syracuse-basketball-will-free-up-a-scholarship-for-one-more-2015-recruit/). The chance of McCullough or someone else turning pro is too low to count on (just 7% for McCullough -- RSCI rank is not always right but correlates very highly with 1-and-done). Unless JB (1) knows who he can push out, (2) knows someone who has promised to play without a scholarship, or (3) knows that Coleman's career is over, I don't see how he can be confident they will secure another recruit - 42% chance of not losing a player (based on past results) is too high to count on. Given that Boeheim has said they never "force" someone out and that Coleman appears to be recovering (if not for this year then for next), I'd say Boeheim's comments reflect either him being over confident about McCullough's 1-and-done chances or #2 - someone has promised to play without scholarship if need be.

    1. From what I understand barring injury, McCullough is only planning to stay for one year. Obviously that's easier said than done. Remember he was a top 10 player before getting bored with the HS scene when he couldn't reclassify early in 2013. I could also see a player like Patterson transferring if he doesn't find himself into the rotation next season. He has already been recruited over with Richardson and Howard coming in next year. Plus if Bryant wants to commit, he could always sign financial aid papers instead of a LOI. Which wouldn't tie him up to the school and he could always keep his options open if extra room isn't made.

    2. I completely agree there are several options, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them panned out. I'm just saying none of them are guarantees. If McCullough is determined to leave after one year regardless of his NBA stock, that's one thing. And I agree that his RSCI is artificially low due to his high school off-court issues. But let's say his RSCI is actually #6 this year -- that still only gives him about a 50-50 chance of being one and done historically. Only top 5 have gone at rates 70% and above.
