Scouting Oshae Brissett and Howard Washington

Here goes my evaluations on Cuse commit Oshae Brissett and PG target Howard Washington from Athlete Institute Academy out in Canada.

Oshae Brissett
Stat line in games viewed.
Orangeville Prep-15 PTS, 5-8 FG, 1-4 3PT, 4-4 FT, 6 RBS, 3 BLKS, 1 STL, 2 TO's.
Bill Crothers-26 PTS, 8-15 FG, 1-4 3PT, 9-15 FT, 7 RBS, 4 STLS, 1 BLK, 1 AST, 2 TO's.

Positives
-Good size for a wing. Looks to be around 6'8/6'9 with long arms and a frame that will continue to fill out over the years.

-Athleticism showed out at times with a few impressive putback dunks, alley-oops, and blocks.

-Much improved shooter than he had shown in the past. Made numerous jump shots from mid-range, deep perimeter, and from the 3pt-line.

-Very aggressive on the open floor in transition. Always in attack mode and either scored or was able to draw a foul.

-Made an impact on the offensive boards and had numerous putback finishes.

-Shows good anticipation when forcing turnovers on defense with numerous tips, deflections, and steals.

-Plays hard with a good motor, but seemed to turn it up a notch whenever his team would trail and needed a spark.

-Not afraid of being a go-to guy when needed. Wants the ball and is looking to make plays during crunch time.

-Has toughness and plays with a lot of emotion. Was always the one to step up and defend his teammates when the opponents would try to start a fight or argument with them.

Negatives
-Very wild at times on offense. Would force up shots that wasn't in the flow of the offense.

-Not much of a passer and has tunnel vision on his drives. Had only 1 assist in two games that was viewed.

-Needs to control his speed with the ball at times and display better ball IQ on drives. Was called for 4 charges in two games. Had about 3 in one game.

-Needs to get stronger as he was easily moved and boxed out for rebounds.

-Scores mostly on jumpers and drives towards the hoop. Will he develop a low post game if his bread n butter moves are taken away from him in games on the next level?

-Shooting form looks solid, but missed 6 free throws in one game. Was it an off game from the line or is that a liability in his game?

-Rebounds his area well, but at times would fall victim to just standing and watching while others battle for the board.

Overall
Brissett fits the prototypical forward that SU fans are used to. He's a player that can come in and provide an immediate contribution in the rotation next season. His ability to stretch the floor with his jumper and aggressiveness in transition should be a much welcome asset for the squad. He's far from a finish product who has several flaws to clean out, but that's understandable for any incoming freshman. He has plenty of tools and upside for the SU staff to work with that should make them and us fans excited about his future.

Howard Washington
Stat line in games viewed.
Orangeville Prep-18 PTS, 7-12 FG, 2-4 3PT, 2-3 FT, 5 AST, 2 RBS, 1 STL, 5 TO's.
Bill Crothers-16 PTS, 3-12 FG, 1-8 3PT, 9-10 FT, 3 AST, 2 RBS, 2 STLS, 3 TO's.

Positives
-Good size for a PG. Around 6'3 and looks to have added good weight physically since his Buffalo/Montverde days.

-Has deep range on his 3pt-shot and wasn't afraid to let it fly. Canada's HS 3pt line is about the same distance as the NBA.

-True PG, in the sense that he isn't a SG playing PG and knows how to run a team and quarterback an offense.

-Displayed good vision in the halfcourt. Numerous times he was able to find cutters to the basket when driving inside for easy scoring opportunities.

-Not explosive with the rock, but was able to pick his spots and get past defenders for open shots.

-Despite struggling with his shot in one game, he was still able to find a way to score points by getting to the line 10 times.

-Like Brissett, always seemed to have turned it up a notch during crunch time.

-Team trailed by 17 in the 4th qtr in one of the games. He hit the go ahead 3 for the win after struggling for most of the game from deep. Also came up with several clutch plays on defense during that stretch.

-Has some toughness in him and wasn't one to back down from a fight when things would get chippy.

-Plays with a good degree of confidence. Never gets too high or low on himself.

Negatives
-Lacks the athleticism and explosiveness that you look for in a top notch PG.

-While he's a good passer and can display some impressive vision at times, he has a bad tendency to force the issue and throw unnecessary passes for turnovers.

-Bad outlet passes and trying to thread the needle in traffic was some of the issues that he needs to correct and limit in order to be successful on the next level.

-Struggled finishing around the hoop numerous times.

-Shot 50% from 3 in one game, then went 1-8 in the next. Was it an off night or is he a streaky shooter?

-Competes on the defensive end, but wouldn't consider him a great defender and is pretty much a non-factor on the boards.

-Due to limitations, is there much of an upside left? Pretty much what you see is what you're going to get on the next level.

Overall
Washington is an interesting option for SU at this point. He's not flashy and doesn't present much of an upside when talking about a potential future college superstar. It doesn't mean that he can't become a real solid player and develop into a nice rotational piece for a college program. An extra ball handler who can hit threes, get to the line, dish out assist, and play with a huge chip on his shoulder is somebody that a program like SU could use in a 2017 class that is limited with PG options at the moment.
