  1. I'm surprised SU has stayed in the mix for Howard. His commitment would max out their scholarships for 2015, pending any other early departures joining Ennis. And he would be joining a potentially very crowded backcourt with Cooney (Sr), Gbinije (Sr), Patterson (Jr), Joseph (So), and Richardson (Fr).

I suppose he's more of a combo guard than Richardson and could provide back up minutes to Joseph/Gbinije at the point. But if the staff sees him as a PG, this would seem to complicate the picture for Battle/Murray in '16.

It's almost a sure thing that Grant will be gone by 2015, but it hardly seems a safe bet for anyone else. Seems a risky move to only have one additional scholarship to offer when the team will need to add depth to the front line.

And on top of those reasons why SU shouldn't take him, it seems like a horrible scenario for Howard in terms of playing time. Any chance he actually commits to Cuse?

    1. Unless a last minute change of heart Howard should be SU's next commit and is being recruited as a PG for the Orange. I think it's best to just let things play out when it comes to Battle/Murray. Nobody expected Waiters, MCW, Ennis to be gone as quick as they were and you don't want to find yourself short on ball handlers as SU has find themselves in the past several years. If Battle/Murray are confident in their abilities then they shouldn't be worried about a commitment from a player coming off an ACL injury.

    2. That is a good point. I can't blame them for wanting more ball handlers, and Howard will provide great length at the top of the zone. I guess we'll see if Syracuse continues to be Point Guard U -- I certainly wouldn't mind.

I was more worried about the team's front line. They should have at least one more scholarship available, and I imagine they'll go for a 5 to complement Coleman/Obokoh. I could see them wanting to add a 3, as well, but it's less of an issue.

    3. Moustapha Diagne and Thomas Bryant are both big men options and I think we'll get at least one of them. Derrick Jones is still an option at the 3, but I think he's more of a luxury than need at this point.

    4. Right, seems likely they'll land at least one of Diagne/Bryant, and that can be done once Grant goes pro. But for signing both and/or Jones, they'd need extra scholarships.

Hypothetically, I might put the odds as: McCullough 35%, Roberson 5%, Joseph 5% for going pro and maybe 20% that someone else leaves, either by transfer or some other reason. You could tweak those odds slightly, but realistically, I think the best you get is a slightly better than 50% chance that a spot opens up for one of those guys.
